Common Houseplant Problems and How to Fix Them

Houseplant Emergency Guide

Yellow leaves? Sticky residue? Don't panic. Most plant problems are easy to fix once you know what your plant is trying to tell you.

Even seasoned plant parents run into trouble. Understanding the symptoms is the first step to becoming a great "plant doctor." We’ve broken down the most frequent issues—from watering woes to pest invasions—with clear, actionable solutions.

1. The Watering Diagnostic

Yellowing leaves are the most common cry for help, but the cause depends entirely on the soil moisture.

Symptom: Leaves are mushy, yellow, and falling off. Soil is wet.

The Fix: Stop watering immediately. If roots are black and mushy, repot into fresh, dry soil and trim the rot.

Symptom: Leaves are dry, crispy, and browning. Soil is bone dry.

The Fix: Give it a deep soak until water drains out. Let it sit in the drainage water for 20 minutes to rehydrate the core.

2. Brown Spots & Sunburn

Crispy Edges

Likely low humidity or tap water sensitivity. Use a pebble tray or switch to filtered water.

White Patches

Sunburn from too much direct light. Move the plant back from the window or add a sheer curtain.

Tiny Brown Dots

Edema (water stress). It's cosmetic and harmless. Improve airflow and let the soil breathe.

3. The Pest Directory

Crucial: Always isolate a plant with pests immediately to prevent a full-blown collection outbreak.

  • Fungus Gnats: Tiny flies around the soil.
Fix: Let the top 2 inches of soil dry out. Use yellow sticky traps to catch adults.
  • Mealybugs: White, cottony masses in leaf joints.
Fix: Dab spots with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Follow up with Neem Oil.
  • Spider Mites: Fine webbing and "dusty" looking leaves.
Fix: Shower the plant vigorously to knock them off. Spray with insecticidal soap every 5 days.
  • Scale: Hard brown bumps on stems.
Fix: Scrape off manually with a dull knife and treat the area with rubbing alcohol.

4. Growth & Habits

  • Leaning Plant: It's "stretching" for light. Rotate the pot 90 degrees every time you water.
  • Top-Heavy: The plant is root-bound and needs a pot 1-2 inches larger.
  • Mold on Soil: Harmless fungus from high moisture. Scrape it off and increase airflow.
